Founded in 2008, Local Matters began in part as a response to a system that makes it difficult for communities in need to have consistent access to healthful, affordable foods and the realization that many lack the skills necessary to feed their families on a budget. Local Matters believes that food education, access, and advocacy are fundamental components of healthy communities.

Join Besa and Local Matters to help increase access to local produce for our Southside neighbors. Besa volunteers will help plant seeds and seedlings, weed, prune plants, spread compost, and harvest produce. Supplies, including tools and gloves, will be provided.

  • 12 is the minimum age required and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
  • Sunscreen is encouraged during warmer months.
  • We encourage volunteers to bring a bottle of water or something to keep hydrated.
  • Parking is available on-site.
  • Court-appointed volunteering: At this time, we can not accept court appointed-requests.
