The Highland Youth Garden began in February 2009 as two recreation centers closed in the Hilltop community. Caring individuals began working with the neighborhood elementary schools to plan positive activities for the youth and the idea of a garden program emerged. In the years that followed, and with the commitment of many volunteers of all ages, the Highland Youth Garden grew to become a .40 acre community garden focused on children.

Join Besa and Highland Youth Garden to support families in the Hilltop community. Besa volunteers will help plant seeds/seedlings, water, weed, harvest fresh produce, and support the produce distribution stand.

Highland Youth Garden will provide gardening gloves and plastic gloves for produce distribution, as well as practice social distancing. Volunteers are required to bring their own mask or face covering, Highland Youth Garden will not be providing any. If you have your own gloves, face mask and/or hand sanitizer please feel free to bring it/use your own.

Ohio’s current stay-at-home order permits people to continue helping neighbors. Healthy and willing volunteers are needed now more than ever, especially to feed the hungry. While we have many neighbors in need, we must each take care of ourselves first. If you are a vulnerable population—an older adult, a cancer patient, live with asthma, etc.—please stay home. If you have traveled out of the country recently, please stay home. If you feel sick or exhibit any symptoms of the virus as shared by the CDC—fever, coughing or shortness of breath—please stay home.

  • A lead volunteer from HYG will provide orientation and training.
  • This is a kid-friendly opportunity, but all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Minors are also required to bring and wear face masks
  • Please dress for the weather and in clothing/shoes, you won't mind getting dirty.
  • We encourage you to bring a bottle of water.
  • All tools and gloves will be provided.
  • Parking is located on S. Highland (which is a one-way street). We recommend heading south onto Wheatland Ave. (also a one-way), and then turning left onto Floral Ave. Volunteers can park in the Highland Youth Garden lot on Floral Ave. or on S. Highland Avenue.
  • Unfortunately, this event is not ADA accessible.
  • Court-appointed volunteering: At this time, we can not accept court-appointed requests.
