OSU Star House

The Star House is dedicated to providing homeless youth, ages 14-24, a safe respite from the streets where they are able to meet their basic needs and begin reconnecting with the larger social system. Within the context of a caring and supportive environment, we provide access to educational, employment, health care, and housing services through working collaborations with community partners.

Star House

This was an easy way to volunteer, but unfortunately it did not provide a lot of contact with the teens at the center. Most of the teens were grabbing food and leaving.

Couple tips

I found this to be a good experience--though not completely what I expected. The young men (it was all young men on my night) at the house during our evening weren't particularly social, but let's face it, it's understandable that it may take a while for them to open up and want to chat. So, I went in expecting more interaction, and I should have been more realistic. Additionally, I decided to bring a healthy side dish and it was not at all what these young men wanted. Next time, I will be sure to bring something with meat, a comfort food, or a treat to brighten their day. Although veggies are what they need, they were certainly not a pick-me-up. Overall, I am very glad I went and got to learn about the house. Also, for anyone who wants to do a little extra when they go, the house is in great need of toiletries (especially deodorant), underwear (preferably *not* white briefs), and jeans for young men.

I enjoyed this experience tremendously. I glean a lot of enjoyment out of cooking for people. Getting to share in the dining experience - well, that's just icing on the cake.

During the dinner, there was talk of celebrating birthdays once a month with a birthday cake. I'd be willing to provide the cakes and most likely the ice cream.

Talk to you soon.

Dinner at the Star House

Volunteering at the star house was a rewarding experience for me. I enjoyed interacting with the staff/volunteers; and I found the energetic, creative spirit of the young people refreshing. I'd cook for these folks anytime.

I found that the time spent at the Start House did not feel useful. I wasn't able to engage much with the youth and thus it didn't feel like I was adding much value. Though I loved the idea, I probably wouldn't do this one again.

Volunteering at Star House

For the past several months I have been volunteering at a monthly dinner for homeless youth in Columbus.

"Volunteering" can be used loosely because I do nothing more than bring food and conversation. It never gets easier to listen to their stories, and today was no different. I naively asked a group of kids if they were going camping when I saw their tents, and one hesitantly said "sorta". Another kid spoke up and said "we live outside." I asked where they planned to go and they said "that's what we are trying to figure out".

Talking to them completely broke my heart. These are young kids with no where to go, probably because of choices they didn't make, or support structures they don't have. These kids make me remember how amazingly blessed I am to have such amazing friends and family, and to have been blessed with everything I have. All my blessings is what allows me to give back to my community, and I urge anyone who reads this to reflect on your own life and try to give back to your community. Also, to remember not to judge others. People are people no matter their circumstance, color, class, gender, sexuality, or religious views and we all deserve to be treated as such. Be kind and smile to one another.

Good Experience For Me

I've been to Star House twice now & it is a good place for homeless teenagers to spend time with others, be safe, socialize, relax, take care of personal care needs and of course enjoy good food ! You can tell staff care and want to be there, the teenagers appreciate it, & everyone gets along which is great ! Look forward to going back again !
