Volunteering at Star House

For the past several months I have been volunteering at a monthly dinner for homeless youth in Columbus.

"Volunteering" can be used loosely because I do nothing more than bring food and conversation. It never gets easier to listen to their stories, and today was no different. I naively asked a group of kids if they were going camping when I saw their tents, and one hesitantly said "sorta". Another kid spoke up and said "we live outside." I asked where they planned to go and they said "that's what we are trying to figure out".

Talking to them completely broke my heart. These are young kids with no where to go, probably because of choices they didn't make, or support structures they don't have. These kids make me remember how amazingly blessed I am to have such amazing friends and family, and to have been blessed with everything I have. All my blessings is what allows me to give back to my community, and I urge anyone who reads this to reflect on your own life and try to give back to your community. Also, to remember not to judge others. People are people no matter their circumstance, color, class, gender, sexuality, or religious views and we all deserve to be treated as such. Be kind and smile to one another.
