Support Individuals Experiencing Domestic Violence & Homelessness

Date: November 16 | Time: 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Venue: LSS Faith Mission

Address:
217 N. Grant Avenue
Columbus, OH 343215

Details:

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) serves thousands of people in need each day in 27 Ohio counties by addressing the four core societal issues of food, shelter, safety and healing. LSS offers housing and supportive services through LSS Faith Mission homeless shelters and domestic violence services through LSS CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence. Their breadth of services focus on uplifting families and strengthening communities.

Join Besa and LSS to sort and organize donations! Both CHOICES and Faith Mission rely heavily on donations to support those affected by homelessness and domestic violence who are staying at the LSS Shelters. As a volunteer, you'll help by sorting through donations, changing inventory, and organizing the donation storage closet so residents are able to access items quickly.

LSS will practice social distancing. Volunteers are required to bring their own mask, as LSS will not provide any. No client interaction will take place. If you have your own gloves, face mask and/or hand sanitizer please feel free to bring it/use your own.

The health and safety of volunteers is a priority. If you are sick, over the age of 50, or have a chronic health condition, it is in your best interest to stay home. Click here for more information about COVID-19.

  • 18 is the minimum age to volunteer.
  • A lead volunteer from LSS will be on-site to provide orientation and training.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required
  • Parking is available at the surface lots of the shelter (on E. Naghten and behind the shelter), as well as metered parking.
  • This event is ADA accessible.

Support Families Experiencing Domestic Abuse

Since 1977, LSS CHOICES has provided counseling, shelter, crisis intervention, education, and community and legal support and advocacy to central Ohio residents facing domestic violence. LSS CHOICES is the only domestic violence shelter in Franklin County.

During this time many of us feel unsafe and uncertain about the future. But for survivors of domestic violence, sheltering in place can feel familiar. Although social distancing is recommended to prevent the spread of COVID-19, abusers now have a legitimate excuse to control and isolate the survivor. As domestic violence surges, CHOICES continues to provide safety and support to survivors.

Join Besa and CHOICES online as we gather virtually to provide Thanksgiving treats and words of encouragement to families experiencing domestic abuse. Using Zoom, we will guide volunteers through making rice krispy turkeys! These will be given to women and children staying at CHOICES. Volunteers are also welcome to include encouraging notes for both the women and staff at CHOICES. This is a great volunteer opportunity to do as a family!

Volunteers will need to drop off off their treats on Monday, November 23rd any time between 9:30am-12:00pm at Faith Mission – 217 N. Grant Avenue - please note the donation drop off is located on the side of the 217 N. Grant building on McKee Alley.
